Panqueques vs. Pancakes

My second day in Argentina, my Spanish was VERY basic. Seriously, it's only a week and a half later and I have a hard time imagining how helpless I was those first two days. In any case, my host-family asked my what I usually had for breakfast back home. Although I usually have cereal and milk, I decided to describe a typical American breakfast with eggs, bacon, and pancakes. As I didn't know a word for pancakes in Castellano (Spanish), I simply said "pancakes".

Next thing I knew, my host-mother cracked some eggs and whipped up some crepes. Did you know they put dulce de leche in their crepes?! Whoever thought of that is a genius! Thinking back, I now realize that panqueques = crepes. Traditional American pancakes with maple syrup and panqueques are two very different things. Although, they do have a few things in common; their names, and the fact they are both flat and irresistibly delicious. My family back home is sending me what I've begun to call a 'care-package' with all the amazing things that I miss from the States. One of those things is pancake mix. Pretty soon, my host-family will know the difference between panqueques and pancakes. Hopefully they sent maple syrup too. I can't find any around here and there simply is no other way to have pancakes!
