Women as President/Gay Rights

As citizens of the United States, we often pride ourselves in being the most advanced in the world. I mean, the US has one of the worlds leading economies and the largest military. However, when the possibilities of candidates for presidency were narrowed down to either a black man or a woman, there was a bit of clamor and bit of unrest in the public. Then, there is also the debate over gay rights and marriage.

In comparison, Argentina currently has Cristina Fernadez as President near the end of her second term in office. In regard to LGBT rights, a law approving the civil union of homosexual couples in both the city of Buenos Aires was endorsed in 2003. Then, in July 2010 same-sex marriage was legalized in Argentina.

Someone I know once referred to the LGBT debates as a 'controversial subject'. Since when has equality become a 'controversial subject'? Especially over such things as sexual orientation, skin color, or gender. To quote from the song "Same Love" by Macklmore: "America the braves/still fears what we don't know". It blows my mind that in our modern 21st century society there is still such intolerance. I will admit we are finally advancing. Although painstakingly slow, we are making progress one little step at a time.
